Saint Dorothea
Saint Dorothea
Description
The artist with multivalent inclinations, Alexandru Rădvan assumes an intense research work and builds sceneries which he visually transposes. The canvas becomes, for him, an opportunity to stage a performance with imaginary-figurative transcriptions. The artist approaches mythological subjects in which he introduces sacred figures and thus brings secular opera into the contemporary. The passion for theatre reveals to Alexandru Rădvan a double pose - that of director-scenographer in the visual arts. His work is organised in thematic cycles, with subjects depicted from history and religion. His characters are rigorously constructed, and the archetypes he proposes present issues of the human condition that raise essential questions. Rădvan will often borrow from the features of both male and female characters. In this work, dedicated to a character of divine origin, we identify, in its duality and specific opposition, the patron saint of gardeners. Placed in a particular context, surrounded by nature, in the garden of Eden, while holding the forbidden apple, the protagonist sketches a neutral expression and subtly blends into the chromatic of the canvas. In his choice of colours, the artist focuses mainly on emotion, but does not omit the comprehensive substrate.
