The Medieval Order of the Knights Templar was established after the first crusade and existed between 1118 and 1312. There is no historical evidence linking the Medieval Templar Knights and the Masonic Templar, nor the Masonic Templar Knights organisations claim such a direct link to the medieval order. Although it was affirmed that its affiliation to Masonry is based on texts indicating that persecuted Templars found refuge in Freemasonry, the order itself states that "there is no evidence of a direct link between the ancient order and the modern order known today as the Templar Knights." The official motto of the Knights Templar is "In hoc signo vinces", meaning "In this sign you will conquer". The ritual is based on the traditions of the Medieval Templar Knights, using them to share moral instructions consistent with the biblical teachings of the Christian tradition.
