On the gilded background of the icon, bordered by a dropped frame, painted on the edge in red, is depicted, seated on a golden bench decorated with precious stones, Saint Hierarch Nicholas, who holds the Open Gospel with his left hand and blesses with the right one. Over the blue chiton he wears a red felon, and atop a blue omophor, with large golden crosses. Around his head he has a halo delimited from the gold background by a row of incised points. In the upper part of the icon, of small size, are depicted in bust, the intercessors: Jesus Christ with the Gospel and Virgin Mary with the omophor (allusion to the Nicene Council in 325). The name of Saint Nicholas is written in Slavic characters. The features of the face are characteristic of the traditional typology, however, in the modeling, influences of Greek painting can be traced. During the reign of Matei Basarab, the Greek current gains more weight, influencing the painting of Wallachia. (A.D.)
