The word Undine was first used by Paracelsus in his alchemical writings in 1566, designating a water nymph. The term associated with and integrated into common language due to the fantastical writings of Hans Christian Andersen is that of the mermaid. For Irina Tănase, mermaids are distinct, solitary beings, wounded by humans. The current work materializes in two component elements, as it "captures the moment of metamorphosis - detachment from the broken tail, the necessary sacrifice to rise to another form of existence. The work speaks about renunciation and courage, about the power to leave a part of you behind in order to evolve. It is the symbol of freedom attained through transformation and the flight that is born out of suffering and necessity.", as the artist declares.
