Traditionally, this dagger was worn as a symbol of social status, displayed by being attached with a braided wool cord over the right shoulder, across the djellaba garment, at waist level, hanging vertically on the left side. Koummya is the Berber version of the traditional dagger of Arab peoples, known as jambiya.
