"The inner vision of the painter overlapped the landscape completely, without gaps and without going outside the lines… The mysterious atmosphere in which the painter basks has found correspondences in the façades of palaces that seem to close, in their propitious shade, the secret of fiery passions that the Renaissance has sheltered, cruel and superb; the innate taste for patina has found brotherly resonances in the shades macerated by time of the sumptuous lagoon citadel. Hence those unique successes, of a universal value, which place him beside the great painters of Venice and which make Petrașcu's 'Venices' his supreme achievements." (Aurel Vladimir Diaconu). Petrașcu's landscape is paradoxical: although aquatic par excellence, it gives the feeling of earthiness and solidity, which gives an undeniable value to the composition and turns it into a defining work of the artist. What remains tangible is the artist's spirit, nowhere more prominent than in his Venices, omnipresent, omniscient, like this authentic view, unique in depicting the present nature - of the place, of the painter's time, as well as of the beholder's. The features depicted in the sphere of the beautiful are flat and they call to the present, current and immediate time; at the same time, the subject creates the impression of an eternal, timeless charm. The beholder is not invited to think or to reflect in spirals of intellectual perspectives, but is encouraged to feel and to experience now, along with the artist, the instance conveyed in a monumental manner.
