His study and his spirit of research took Nicolae Tonitza to various places in the country, as relevant as possible for his creation. After the three years he spent in Vălenii de Munte, between 1921 and 1924 and before the itinerary into Țara Făgărașului in 1925, Tonitza reached the shores of the Black Sea. Mangalia, the coasts of Dobruja, the views of the beach, the cafés and the locals constantly returned to the painter's imagination until the "discovery" of Balchik (1933); this stage defined his creation, particularly the third decade of last century. By choosing a completely unidentifiable corner, the painter finds himself in that solitude vibrating out of his own biography, so he painted guided by the most sincere personal emotions. The sensorial effect is initially filtered by his instinct, then connected to a set of chromatic principles easy to recognise in the landscape of South Dobruja. Dull, in a picturesque water landscape, the central motif acquires its relevance only through its obvious position in the nearest plane, and so we can feel the dissonance between the two registers. The atmosphere is quiet, rather typical for most landscapes painted by Tonitza, particularly those of Dobruja.
