For Ștefan Dimitrescu, man has always produced one of the most studied pictorial researches made in his quite short career (he graduated from the School of Fine Arts in Iași in 1908 and died in 1933). Although the beginning of his activity threw him into more or less relevant pursuits, in an attempt to get rid of his Academicist background acquired during his studies, Dimitrescu regularly looked for new, pertinent manners to shape a pictorial language as coherent and valid as possible, given than he discovered and got a sense of Modernism in the years he spent in Paris (1912-1913). Man begins to appear in his artistic areas particularly in the period before World War I, when, influenced by Cezanne, but also inspired by interior compositions of Toulouse-Lautrec, Dimitrescu painted Bucharest interiors, in Expressionist chromatic tones. Deeply attracted by man and its condition, for which he shows a warm kind of comprehension, led by a purely humanistic view of life and the world, Ștefan Dimitrescu conveyed his own ideas in the paintings made in various areas of the country, from the lands of Olt and Făgăraș to the Moldavian region, and later, in Dobruja. However, some of the most important compositions with human figured made by Dimitrescu are related to his close universe and are deeply intimate. The scenes with his family (his wife or his daughter Margareta), the compositions with nudes or figures in familiar interiors seem to be his most emotional creations, works in which Dimitrescu recreates a comfortable atmosphere, closely connected to the pictorial effect.
