Dimitar Kazakov creates paintings, graphics, drawings, ceramics and wood sculptures. He is one of the authors who build the image of contemporary Bulgarian plastic culture and present it outside the borders of Bulgaria. Dimitar Kazakov's work was the subject of great interest from the public and collectors in Bulgaria and abroad even during his lifetime. His exhibitions have been presented in Paris, Tokyo, New York, etc. Even today he is one of the most sought-after and collected authors. Many studies and biographical books have been dedicated to his work.
Throughout his life, Dimitar Kazakov-Neron remained deeply connected to the land and our traditional culture. He created a magical world in which memories of his native village of Tsarski Izvor, myths and legends from national folklore, projections of ancient cultures and civilizations are intertwined. Without hiding his affinity for the Orthodox icon-painting tradition, he is inspired by the art of the Etruscans, Mycenae, Persia, Iran.
"... The distance from the Kazanlak tomb to the image of Desislava (in the Boyana Church) is not great. This distance, covered with millennial archaeological layers, is my idol and my inspiration.” (From a 1979 letter to Aksinia Dzhurova, “The Myth of Dimitar Kazakov Nero”, 2003). Ancient civilizations inspire him and this is evident in his works, which always carry a breath of the past. They are organically connected with mythology and tradition.
The painting “Ancient Composition” was created in the early 1980s. In it, all these components are combined in an abstract-figurative imagery, in which conditionally constructed figures float in a weightless surreal space, immersed in earthy ranges of golden ocher, light red and green accents. Dimitar Kazakov is not tempted by the three-dimensional construction of the form. Every inch of the canvas is populated with characters and symbols, viewed from an unusual angle, located in an “inverted space” according to the author. The themes of love, the earth, nature and its wonders occupy a central place. According to the author, the painting is a universe, a complex world and a continuous source of life.
Dimitar Kazakov-Nero is one of the most inimitable artists in Bulgarian art. His work never ceases to surprise us with its bold and innovative solutions. “Ancient Composition” is an emblematic painting of the artist’s style. (S.N.)
