One of the most preferred subjects in Nikola Tanev's work are the city views and courtyards in sunny Karlovo. With the Karlovo courtyards, houses and streets on the canvases, which came out from under Tanev's brush, he invites the viewer to immerse himself in the mood of the city. The skillful handling of light and shadow, the balanced color scheme and the impressive large brushstrokes build the recognizable creative style of the author of the work "Karlovo Courtyard". The painting "Karlovo Courtyard" is representative of Nikola Tanev's work in the 1930s both as a plot and as a plastic construction of the painting canvas. The artist's creative pursuits such as introducing angles independent of physical parameters, dynamics and large brushstrokes can also be found in the presented work. Nikola Tanev invites the viewer under the colorful shadow, which he skillfully recreated with warm and cold tones. In depicting the romantic Karlov courtyards, Tanev also develops his ideas about the Homeland, revealing through the Bulgarian home, the secret and intimate world of its inhabitants. (A.M.)
