Nikola Tanev is a leading figure in the development of modern Bulgarian art since the late 1920s. A recognizable creative style, lyricism, a sense of light, airiness and color are the main characteristics that build Tanev's artistic world. Specific to the artist is the impressionistic approach, combined with the ideas of preserving the Motherland. The work "Plovdiv Street" is a summary of the author's artistic pursuits in the period. An impressive work, in the character of Nikola Tanev's work of the time, presents a city landscape immersed in gentle light. The skillful handling of light and shadow, contrasts and the delicate blending of strokes is typical of similar landscapes by the artist. Nikola Tanev's obvious impressionistic pursuits lead him in an interesting direction, where he manages to combine them with the ideas of preserving the Motherland. It is no coincidence that the "main character" in his works are views of Bulgarian cities. Characteristic of the picturesque landscapes by Nikola Tanev is his tendency towards idealization, which in turn reveals the emotional sensitivity of the artist: "There were dozens of artists who chose the national ideal and the national character at that time as the support of their value system. Tanev also made his choice and from then on his painting was programmatically sought after and advertised, and sometimes - why not - advertised as Bulgarian, as resurrecting the riches of our antiquity. He followed this choice with his characteristic fervor". Nikola Tanev is a prominent painter, a "figure of the first magnitude" in the history of Bulgarian art, who with his impressionistic technique, love and curiosity for the Motherland, contributes to its preservation in eternity. (A.M.)"
