The Dutch cartographer and publisher Willem Janszoon Blaeu (1571-1638) published in 1635 his famous work, ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’, of which the present piece is part of, probably a slightly later printing. The term Romania refers to the territories South of the Danube that belonged to the Roman Empire in antiquity and Wallachia overlaps in general terms with Wallachia. On the back, there is a comprehensive explanation of the map in Dutch. In the upper left-hand corner, a beautiful cartridge shows the title of the map, adorned with a crescent symbolising the dependence of these territories on the Ottoman Empire at the time of publication. Engraving on copper, manually coloured after imprinting.
