In 1880 Auguste Rodin was commissioned by the future Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris for the "Gates of Hell" project, a project that was partially completed, and which would produce two of his most famous works: "Gânditorul" ("The Thinker") and "Sărutul" ("The Kiss"). "Sărutul" ("The Kiss") was reworked in 1887 as an individual work, and later in 1898, following a commission from the French government, to which the sculptor would devote almost ten years.
