The Self-Portrait by Atanas Patsev is characteristic of the artist’s work not only as a genre he frequently explored, but also for his distinctive way of applying paint in elongated, lentil-like strokes with a watercolor-like transparency of color. This approach to constructing form creates a vivid and translucent pictorial surface that impresses with its tangible presence. The classical genre through which we owe much of our visual understanding of many creators in world art history is the self-portrait. It reflects the social status, as well as the cultural, racial, and religious identity of the artist across the centuries. Psychological depth is one of the defining features of the genre. Alongside physiognomic characteristics, it reveals the temperament and character of the artist as model. In the self-portraits of Atanas Patsev, one senses melancholy and sadness—an intimate form of confession and revelation. This strong sensitivity is conveyed through the expressiveness of color and the mastery of his painterly language. (S.N.)
