Sigismund Báthory led Transylvania as a prince four times between 1588 and 1602. He was a contemporary of Michael the Brave and Emperor Rudolf II of Habsburg. His portrait was made in 1607 by the famous Flemish engraver Aegidius Sadeler (1570-1629), appointed by Rudolf II as the court artist. At his command, Sadeler created an extensive series of portraits of his contemporaries, whom the emperor had, for longer or shorter periods of time, political interests, such as Michael the Brave and Sigismund Báthory. The actual portrait of the prince was cut out from the engraving and glued onto a paper yellowed with time. On the verso of the paper support, there are two ex-libris of the collectors who enjoyed the present piece.
