Wilhelm de Kotzebue (1813-1887) met the Romanians from the Principalities twice in the first half of the 19th century. The first time, in his capacity as consul of the Russian Empire in Iași during the regulatory period, the second time through his wife, who came from a prestigious family of the great Moldovan boyars, Aspasia Cantacuzino. He wrote several works describing life in Moldova during his era, and translated Romanian folk poetry into German. The book in question is a copy of Kotzebue's only novel, inspired by Romanian realities. The binding is the original, from that era.
