The photograph represents one of the last known images of the leader of the Romanian Revolution in Transylvania from 1848-1849. Avram Iancu was born in 1824 and died in 1872, spending his last decade of life forgotten by contemporaries and disappointed. The piece was made approximately around the age of 40-41 of the leader of the Transylvanian Romanians and shows him poorly dressed, unkempt but adopting a pose, with his hand caught in his clothing, and his gaze directed straight, without hesitation, towards the camera.
