Alexandru de Battenberg was the first ruling prince of Bulgaria according to the Treaty of Peace from Berlin in 1878. He led between 1879 and 1886 when he was removed following a coup encouraged by Russia. At the bottom of the piece is the holographic signature of the prince. The photograph was taken by the Russian photographer Sergey Lvovich Levitsky, official photographer of the imperial family.
