The order was created by King Carol I on March 14, 1881, following the proclamation of the Kingdom of Romania, and was to reward outstanding services to the state, both by the civilians and the military. The knighthood decoration is of the first model of 1881, most likely awarded during the First World War; it displays the typical traits of a French manufacture, such as the long pointed swords, the exaggerated Maltese cross points and the decorated under-enamel surface with a repeating diamond pattern. In addition to the above mentioned Maltese enamelled, the obverse features the central crown located in the central lozenge, surrounded by the phrase "By ourselves" and the date of creation of the order, while the reverse includes the years 1866, 1877 and 1881, turning points in the recent history of the new Romanian state.
