Ilie Năstase is one of the greatest tennis players in history, the world leader of the '70s. He has over 100 ATP titles to his name, of which 64 are in singles and 45 in doubles. Among the 58 single titles that Ilie Năstase won throughout his career, are the US Open in 1972, and Roland Garros in 1973. In doubles, he won the tournaments at Wimbledon in 1973, Roland Garros in 1970 and the US Open in 1975. He also won the Tournament of Champions four times in 1971, 1972, 1973 and 1975. For the Romanian Davis Cup team, he played a total of 146 single and doubles matches over 18 years, winning 109. Alongside Ion Tiriac, he reached the Davis Cup final three times, in 1969, 1971 and 1972. He was the runner-up in the Wimbledon singles competition twice, in 1972, in the final against Stan Smith, and in 1976, against Björn Borg. Năstase was known for his court jestering, but also for his reputation for using aggressive tactics, many of them highly successful, for which he earned the nickname "Nasty". Ilie Năstase was also the first athlete to sign a sponsorship contract with the Nike brand in 1972.
