Timp de 30 de ani, Jules Michelet (1798 – 1874) a lucrat la realizarea a două opere fundamentale Istoria Franţei şi Istoria Revoluţiei Franceze. Ernest Flamarion a publicat aceste opere sub titlul generic de Istoria Franţei în 16 volume, ediţie definitivă, revăzută şi corectată. Cele trei volume prezentate sunt dedicate Evului mediu (vol.1 şi 2) şi Revoluţiei franceze (vol.3). Sunt legate identic, în carton şi piele la cotor. Pe cotorul cu ornamente fitomorfe este imprimat, la cald, titlul şi numărul volumului.
