Obverse legend: GAB·D:G·&SA·RO·IM·ET·TRAN·PRIN·1626 Obverse description: The legend is arranged in a circle between two pearl circles. The Virgin Mary is centrally placed, holding Christ in her arms, all surrounded by rays. Christ holds a sceptre in his hand. Reverse legend: ·PAR·REG·HVN·DO·SIC·COOP·RA·DVX· Reverse description: The legend is arranged in a circle between two pearl circles. A divided Spanish shield, with the edges decorated with "cuir découpé" elements, bearing a modern closed crown. The first quarter presents eight bands, and the second quarter open crown with double cross. In the center of the shield, a circular inescutcheon with the coat of arms of the Bethlen family (two swans facing each other, their necks pierced by the same arrow). The piece represents a historical-numismatic document of exceptional value, relevant for understanding the economic, monetary and administrative situation of the Principality of Transylvania in the first half of the 17th century. The monetary emissions during the time of Gabriel Bethlen reflect the complexity of the Transylvanian monetary system, characterized by a diversity of denominations and the use of precious metal resources from the region’s mining operations. With its technical and epigraphic features, the piece contributes to documenting the monetary production of this period, as well as researching the role of issuing workshops, among which the mint of Baia Mare had significant importance.
