Obverse legend: DN ANASTA - SIVS P P AVG Obverse description: Circular legend on the edge, interrupted in two places by the bust of the emperor, represented frontally and slightly turned to the right. He is depicted wearing a helmet with a beaded diadem and cuirass, holding in his right hand a lance resting on his right shoulder, and in his left hand a shield on which is schematically depicted a scene of a horseman piercing with a spear a fallen enemy. The composition is framed by an outer beaded circle, only partially preserved. Reverse legend: VICTORI - AAVGCC I / CONOB Reverse description: Circular legend on the edge, with the indication of the mint in exergue. Victory standing, oriented to the left, dressed in a long garment, holding in her right hand a crux longa decorated with precious stones; star in the right field. The piece has a high numismatic interest, as it is an illustrative piece for the monetary reform of Anastasius in 498, when major changes occur at the level of iconography to which are added elements with deep religious interpretations. Due to its almost perfect state of preservation, this piece becomes an extremely important artifact for documenting these changes and understanding the phenomenon of transition from Roman culture to Byzantine culture.
