A strong source of inspiration for Șerban Savu’s art consisted of the relics of the communist regime, including the abandoned monumental projects, the forlorn factories, and the grey, sullen apartment buildings swarming the entire country. It is interesting to note how these sources inspired him and caused him to illustrate this Post-Revolution world filled with empty hopes: a sincere objectivity of the surrounding reality, without a hint of personal resent. In his paintings, Savu manages to capture the essence of the transition period and its consequences on contemporary life. The universe of his paintings has undertones of the values of the past, of Socialist man, as well as those of the new freedoms, newly earned, but lacking direction and meaning. The scenes capture events from the industrialized suburban areas, where, on the whole, detachment and calmness seem to be the predominant feelings. However, after a more detailed look at the carefully-constructed scenes, the inconsistencies bestowed by the structure of society and its consequences on everyday life. Ordinary life is the main subject of Savu’s paintings. He is concerned with individuals who do not have a special social status, who do not have any concerns out of the ordinary, nor do they recurrently take part in the fashionable social life. The anonymous become essential in the illustration of what is real, they are the foundation for the construction of his works.
