A founding member of the Rostopasca group, through whose activities the art of the post-1990s has regained its social activism, irony and surprise, Nicolae Comănescu sees Bucharest as an inexhaustible source for his work. Not coincidentally, it served as a starting point for several ideas, including the Berceni dust series, or "Beach culture in Bercsenyi". A city suffocating under heat waves in the absence of green spaces, overcrowded, decaying, motley in the behaviour of its citizens, the city and its neighbourhoods take on something of the "seaside culture" during the hot season. In 2011, some 88 works gathered under the title "Berceni" (and taken from the three large series inspired by the Bucharest neighbourhood) were the subject of Comănescu's solo exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art. Beyond the negative aura or the stereotype of the subject, we find in Nicolae Comănescu's pictorial approach a contagious humour, unique stylistic collages, subtle cultural allusions, a chromatic hallucination, thus juggling between the concrete urban reality and the collective imaginary.
