Born in Botoșani, like so many other great Romanian artists, including the likes of Mihai Eminescu and George Enescu, Constantin Piliuță attends the courses of the "Nicolae Grigorescu" National Institute of Visual Arts in Bucharest, under the careful guidance of Prof. Alexandru Ciucurencu. Dubbed the "enfant terrible of painting", Piliuță has been criticized for the fact that his work does not meet the requirements of the time, with the artist rather favouring the idealisation of romanticism. He spends his youth studying the motifs that would serve as his inspiration throughout his painting career. One of the leitmotifs of his work can be found in the form of flowers. Piliuță's flowers were oftentimes likened to Luchian's or Tonitza's flowers. Demanding and rigorous by nature, the artist creates still art paintings inspired by everyday life, which he passes through his own imaginative filter, yet still observing the genuine valences of the fragments of nature depicted. "Still Life with Pears and Knife" brings colour to the foreground. Colour is detached from the two-dimensional characteristic of the painting and remains imprinted in the viewer's mind. Piliuță creates a humanized still life, overflowing with aesthetic expressiveness, where natural elements gain emotion and the three-dimensional characteristic of the depicted room remains the background.
