Oriented towards sculptural and conceptual installations, Kawamata executes monumental works, which he displays in exterior public spaces. His career reached new climaxes especially after he took part in the Venice Biennale in 1987. The artist was often included in international exhibitions and activated as a teacher in artistic education units in Tokyo and Paris. His small-scale works cannot be deciphered merely in terms of sketches for his monumental installations, but must be understood as works in their own right, encompassing his entire working process. Kawamata makes a transcendental approach to the fields of architecture, history or sociology as well. He works amid demolition and building sites and is concerned with the evolution of the environment within the construction-destruction paradigm. He uses recycled or abandoned materials, mainly made of wood, creating unconventional structures. He rethinks the connections between day-to-day spaces, assigning them new meanings, starting from the premises of the interaction between human beings and the surrounding environment.
