In a 9-page letter of April 1865, A.D. Xenopol defends Titu Maiorescu, then Rector and Professor at the Central School for Girls in Iasi, following accusations of immorality made by his political opponents and framed by an opposing group of Iasi academics, led by N. Ionescu, linked to his alleged relationship with Emilia Rickert, the school's Vice-Principal. Xenopol criticizes the 1864 trial and argues the injustice done to Maiorescu. The trial lasted 6 months, and as a result, Maiorescu was acquitted, and reinstated in teaching with full rights. This letter bears the "JMM" embossed stamp. The lot also features another letter dated February 25, 1869, with an interesting mathematical representation, and a postcard from 1891 about finding a buyer.
