The Polish-born French officer, cartographer, engineer and architect Guillaume Levasseur de Beauplan (1600-1673) is considered one of the first geographers to speak of Ukraine, the territory between the Russian Empire and the Kingdom of Poland. An encyclopaedist, he published the first edition of this work in 1660, providing for the first time a summary of geographical, economic, historical and demographic information on Ukraine. The work appeared under the patronage of King John Casimir II of Poland (1648-1668). The copy includes on the title page the ex-libris of a French Christian missionary association, Missionaires de France, from the first half of the 19th century. The cover is original, vintage, leather-covered cardboard and shows signs of age.
