Hungarian Prince Gabriel Bethlen ruled the Principality of Transylvania from 1613 to 1629. He came from an illustrious Hungarian aristocratic family, and his anti-Habsburg policy was a strong support for the powers that opposed the Holy Roman Empire during the Thirty Years War. A good administrator of the Principality, he implemented reforms that strengthened central power but also had positive economic consequences. This piece, first performed in 1620, is part of the work Historia nostri temporis (History of Our Times) published in 1659 in Germany. Engraving on copper.
