One of the most interesting creative periods in Schweitzer-Cumpăna's career can be discovered during the 1920s, when the artist definitively takes on the rural subject. It is the period in which his painting is unanimously recognized. His private exhibition of 1920 was congratulated by some famous names of the Romanian culture, conferring Cumpăna the status of great creator. His oil paintings included in that exhibition were displayed in important collections such as the art collections of Anastase Simu (3) and Iosif Dona (2), his work was commented by Nichifor Crainic or Nicolae Iorga, and Tonitza noticed him and appreciated his " ... lively, juicy, vibrant... palette". During this first decade of recognition and appreciation, the painter persevered and permanently experimented. While experimenting with various sources of inspiration (study trips to Italy, Greece or France), in search of working quite extensively on landscapes, his most significant and representative theme remained peasant centred. Rural scenes abound without being boring, Schweitzer managing to avoid repetition, maybe precisely of his style of applying brush and knife strokes to the pictorial surface. The year 1925 found the painter on a sharp rise: he exhibited two of this artworks alongside the great names of the modern Romanian painting in the exhibition organized at the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris and organized a private exhibition at the Athenaeum.
