A testament to his spirituality, Nicolae Grigorescu's work of art shows an ideal panorama of the nature and human image, themes to which the artist always remained faithful throughout his creation. Inspired by his home area, the artist would often depict fragments of the time and places he went through, immortalizing the spirits and characters he would encounter during his pilgrimages. He would pay special attention to the female character, that we find in generic title compositions, in "studies", and in works of art entitled around the atmosphere created by the character. His identity most often remained shrouded in mystery, the primary purpose of the artist being to paint generic characters. Hence, the titles of his works with titles, rare in number, signal a number of meanings, the female character often replacing a social status ("Dowry girl"), an occupation ("Sewing", "With the needle", "Country girl spinning", "Country girl reading"), ethnicity ("Gypsy girl from Ghergani"), place of origin ("Rucăreancă", "Munteanca"), a time of relaxation ("Thoughtful", "The girl with the mirror") etc. Present in 1984 in the Retrospective Exhibition "Nicolae Grigorescu. Painting-graphic", from the Art Museum of the Socialist Republic of Romania, the painting "The girl with the mirror" was to be among the 469 works of painting and graphics exhibited in a large ensemble, an event through which the artist Grigorescu would be brought back to the top of the art-lovers.
