Ștefan Câlția's paintings are voluble, full of symbols and anecdotes. Ștefan Câlția is an incurable storyteller in images. Each work of art is a fairy tale, full of miracles, with flying fish or floating houses, with a divine light pouring from nowhere and melting into the image. His paintings are a sort of "cabinet of curiosities", an imaginary museum in which the "hoarding of the imaginary" (Andrei Pleșu) takes place. An entire world parades before our eyes like on a stage. His metaphorical painting, full of ambiguous lessons, pervaded by fragile teenage girls with faces sometimes masked like clowns, flute players, acrobats, unicorns, real life animals, according to some, or fantastic, according to others, endowed with miraculous powers, fish, monkeys, buffaloes, goats, with backgrounds rather biplane than with a Renaissance perspective, suggests a world that is rather chimeric, surrealistic, although the raw material that triggers the inspiration comes from the surrounding universe, from the landscapes that enchanted his eye in the Făgăraș Region, from the craftsmanship and beauty fascinating objects. Ștefan Câlția's work is focused on the main character in its essential role. The characters concentrate the main significance of the figure, enhancing its sense of fable. The costumes remind of carnival processions, with an emphasis on the ludic and dreamlike nature of the scene. There are two types of iconography: the human and the animal nature. The atmosphere of the picture suggests mystery and melancholy.
