A skilled wood carver and narrator of past times, Gheza Vida is, thanks to his art, a perpetrator of popular tradition, creating a meeting between man, the origin and the ancestor. His breakthrough as a sculptor takes place in 1937, within a collective exhibition, around a group of artists who separated from the "Baia Mare Painters' Society", when he managed, on this occasion, to get noticed both by art collectors and by the press of those times. Developed mainly around his place of origin, Baia Mare, the artist's creation would evolve under the influence of intense emotions, at the same level with vital instincts. Therefore, in tight connection to countryside ethos, his sculpture can be narrated. Amongst his most representative works, we mention "Monumentul Ostaşului Român" ("Monument of the Romanian Soldier") (1964), "Monumentul Ţăranilor Martiri" (Monument of the Martyr Peasants") in Moisei (wood, 1966 and stone, 1972), or "Sfatul Bătrânilor" ("The Old Men's Council") (1971), all of them created in the spirit of the ancient traditional or national environment, transposed, with the passage of time, into real sculptural symbols.
