During his studies in Paris, the artist collaborates with humour publications Les Témoin and Le Rire, for which he draws for two years and through which he comes into contact with the Avant-Garde artistic movement. He comes into contact with André Derain and Brâncuşi, who introduce him to Picasso's circle, and the drawings he published in the affiliated magazines bring him celebrity on the European level. His work as an illustrator and caricaturist for humour magazines brings him closer to the "Belle Époque" artistic repertoire. The artist became familiar with the work of Toulouse-Lautrec even since his studies in Munich (1902-1904), and felt a certain affinity towards his style, especially when capturing human characters and the fluidity of the drawing lines. Thanks to free and intuitive painting, which captures social characters and realities, he would impose his moralising vision. (E.C.)
