Sabin Bălașa's works transcend reality and intertwine with metaphor, poetry and the fabulous. In the artist's work, they go beyond the status of essential themes of creation and become the defining feature. Thus, the painter approaches subjects such as life and death, childhood and youth, or the strength of human creation, superimposed on the backdrop of the boundless universe. Humanoid figures, strangely beautiful, cold, unreal, populate the fabulous world outlined by Bălașa. They are caught in noble and expressive positions, becoming the recurrent, essential motif of Bălașa's painting. Although the exaggeration of topics taken from beyond the mundane everyday points to the supernatural and the atemporality, they are perceived by the viewer in the most natural way, without questioning their origin. In Bălașa's work, the color blue - in a uniform shade of ultramarine, spread homogeneously and clearly - decisively dominates the works. The blue acquires divine valences, representing the connection between the human physical and the ineffable celestial. This choice is not accidental for the artist, but contains deep meanings, characteristic of Romanians: "My blue is from Miorita and from Eminescu, that is from our spiritual matrix". In the 70s, Bălașa is in full period of artistic and professional affirmation. In the spirit of "cosmic romanticism", as Bălașa called it, his work intertwines the real and the unreal, the individual and the universal in lucid fantastic compositions. Bălașa opposes conventional art, approaching more the surrealist artists, who appreciate the prevalence of figuration and the trend towards metaphysics. We note these features in the artist's works, he himself saying that "great art is essentially figurative". In general, Bălașa's female characters can be considered Mothers, Goddesses, Muses, supporting "the harmony of light". We identify in this work the dual iconographic representation of contrasts, as naturally exists in the cosmos. The opposition is suggested by the opposite coloring of the two subjects, but harmoniously complementary in physiognomy. Between them is suggested a deep connection, represented by the metaphor which leads to thoughts of sun and moon, day and night, both indispensable to life. The symbol of duality we meet in numerous works signed Bălașa, among which we mention "Couple", "Sisters" and "Feeling". Bălașa's compositions are balanced, there is a unity between form and content, between appearance and subtext. They represent messages through which the artist encourages the viewer to ask questions about the very great themes of human existence. (L. M)
