Obverse: Bison head with a star between the horns, on the sides rosette and crescent moon, and the legend in Slavonic language "+ MONETAMOLDAVIE" Reverse: Shield with a double cross and anchored heads and the legend "+ STEFANVSVOIEVODA" Saint Stephen the Great, canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church, was the ruler of Moldova for the longest time considering both medieval Romanian Countries, during the period 1457 - 1504, for 47 years. The monetary issues attributed to Saint Stephen the Great's reign are groschen and half groschen in the Ottoman asper system, a monetary system that continued the monetary reform of Petru Aron (1455 - 1457). The coins come in two types, superior title silver, of a relatively restricted number, mainly used to pay the military service of the boyars and mercenaries, and less for commercial exchanges, where payment in coins issued by stronger neighboring states was preferred.
