In April 1909, the heir to the German Empire's throne, Crown Prince Wilhelm, made an official visit to Romania, where he was received with exceptional pomp. The pretext represented the king's 70th birthday anniversary. On this occasion, Wilhelm met Martha Bibescu, who was in the suite of the crown princess Maria, whom he fell in love with and whom he wanted to take with him to Germany, but was refused by her. The menu marks the dinner that King Carol I offered to his military household and the military attachés on mission in Bucharest, in honor of Wilhelm, in the presence of other members of the Romanian royal family as well. The piece is framed in a period silver-plated brass frame richly decorated with stylized floral motifs.
