Pictor specializat în genul portretisticii şi al peisagisticii, Karlinsky a studiat la Academia de Artă din Viena între anii 1887 şi 1894, avându-i ca profesori pe Julius Victor Berger şi Edward Peithner von Lichtenfels.
Întreprinde călătorii de studii în Germania, Olanda şi Italia, activând pentru o perioadă în cadrul coloniei artistice de la Fahrafeld. În timpul celor două războaie mondiale lucrează ca artist pe front.
