Much of Mirea’s portrait work over more than 40 years of practice focused mainly on painting an average, even high, social category. This is due both to the relations started in the French capital, and to the status he had in the country: first a professor at Fine Arts, then a director of the Bucharest School. Beyond his teaching career, Mirea had also become one of the most contracted local painters in terms of decorating mansions and palaces in the capital, his murals being obviously superior to those of his generation colleagues. As for this portrait, it is part of the suite of child and adolescent faces of the Bucharest’s social elite around 1900, this being more likely than an anonymous portrait due to the fact that the model is dressed and arranged in a "classic" fashion. As for the portrait itself, Mirea managed to capture the spirit and the mood, and the canvas impressed with the young girl’s candour and peace of mind. (I.P.)
