A classic spirit, concerned with order and balance, Theodor Pallady's work acquires rational values, projected on a background of permanence. He cultivated his creation in France, in Paris, in Aman Jean's studio and later at the School of Fine Arts. Thus, Pallady becomes one of the most appreciated painters of modern art, being noticed by the Parisian criticism, in whose space he made his artistic debut ("Universal Exhibition", 1900), as well as by the Bucharest one. Among his praisers are contemporaries Tudor Arghezi, Francisc Șirato, Lucian Blaga, Nicolae Tonitza, as well as personalities of the time, Gustave Kahn, Jean Royère, etc. Perceived as an "artist-interpreter", the universe of his creation concentrates, especially after returning from Paris, around the intimate setting. In this space, Pallady devotes himself to themes such as the nude, the still life, the portrait, the self-portrait and the interior, which he often returns to, with the aim of perfecting. In this intimate setting we find the woman, in fact the muse of his work, to whom he most often attributes enigmatic values. The female model is depicted in the bohemian atmosphere of the artist's studio, in contemplative or anticipatory postures, reading or resting in armchairs or on couches. More attracted by the intimate atmosphere than by a lighted plein air, the artist carefully and intentionally constructs the decor of his room. The sofa, the armchair, the chaise longue, the small table decorated with a flower vase or a clock, the books signed by Baudelaire or Mallarmé become fundamental elements of Theodor Pallady's reveries. In the present work, the artist seeks to immortalize feminine mysteries in a family, domestic atmosphere. Through the posture of the subject, with the line of the body unfolding on the horizontal plane, caught napping on the sofa, Pallady induces us the idea of spontaneity, of naturalism. Thus, Pallady's quintessential composition, through the balance of the construction contrasts with the naturalness of the body, highlighted by the comfortable posture of the limbs and by the draping of the dress.
