Ion Mândru established himself as a painter from the year 1934, year in which he participates for the first time in the painting and sculpture Official Salon organised in Bucharest. He will constantly participate in these artistic manifestations and will have his first personal exhibition in 1942, in Munich, Bavaria. In 1953, Ion Mândru becomes member of the Union of Plastic Artists from Bucharest. In his creation, we often meet still lives, landscapes or portraits. The artist's inspiration of traditional origin, will be transposed into impressionistic reinterpretations of the parental home or other corners of picturesque nature. In portraits, Ion Mândru captures young workers, art collectors, doctors or composers ("Portrait of George Enescu"). However, one of his most common thematic remains the navy. His works are full of canvas transcriptions of seascapes. Whether is the Seine, in France, or Constanța, the artist illustrates ports, ships and sailors with short touch lines, in a bright palette, which captures the real atmosphere of the presented view.
