A passionate traveller, an adventurer animated by a romantic spirit, the artist travelled through Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Turkey, and even reached Persia, but he was most attracted to the places and people of the Romanian Kingdom. He finally settled in Bucharest around 1843, immediately becoming a close friend of the Royal Court. He worked for the ruler brothers Bibescu/Ştirbei, became a painter and a photographer of Cuza, and after 1866, he became close to the Royal House from the same position of an official artist. The year 1866 marked the arrival of Prince Carol to the rule of Romania, who kept Szathmari in his service, starting an important relationship between the artist and the Royal Court.
