Ţuculescu's art is more like an artistic experience, in which one can find the combustion of a troubled spirit, restlessly looking for his own artistic path. He succeeds in remaining outside any stylistic school, although he studied painting in direct contact with the works of his predecessors, such as Grigorescu, Luchian, Andreescu, whom Ţuculescu admired very much and from whom he managed to break away once he fully understood their work, finding his own expressiveness by defying all aesthetic limits. Although repeatedly criticised for his atypical works and the violence of his chromatic contrasts, which did not fit in the Impressionist standards which critics and collectors were accustomed to, Ţuculescu continued to defy any local artistic formula. He had a spectacular evolution, both artistically and spiritually, focusing more and more on achieving the purity of self-expression and intense emotional discharge. The Expressionist tendencies around which the artist oscillates became increasingly apparent since 1939. Aside from the brilliant colours in the rural landscapes, there is a bleak, intense, perhaps a bit odd chromatics, supplemented by somewhat extravagant themes which matched them to perfection. Since 1942, his chromatic contrasts became much more intense, his touches gained an unleashed expressiveness, and his images appeared to be reduced to a few wide planes. The artist himself said: "We are too troubled to settle for beautiful pictures; we must get rid of the Platonic sweetness in art; life is profound, dramatic." In the light of this attitude there was organised the exhibition at the Athenaeum in 1947, which included works that began to reveal the expressiveness that was so specific to him, which made him stand out it in the Romanian artistic space. "By the Window" is a work with strong Expressionist influences, easy to notice in the colour palette that Ţuculescu used. Although the universe of the work is still realistic in nature, the image acquires that Expressionist air, precisely through the boldness of the touches and through the colours used. The work defines very well the pre-1947 period, a period characterised by the alternation between the naturalist vision and the new one, when the nostalgia of nature was stronger." RS
