The name of Genko Genkov is a symbol of creative freedom and the defense of a personal artistic vision. In his early paintings from the late 1950s and early 1960s, his style is delicate and tonally restrained. The direction he chooses in the following decades moves toward increasingly vivid color values in compositionally simplified natural landscapes, painted from life. By its subject matter, stylistic features, and distinctive manner of applying paint, the painting “Forest Landscape” belongs to Genko Genkov’s mature period from the late 1970s and early 1980s, and more specifically to his works of a more sketch-like character. Supporting this are the following characteristics of the painting: a subject that includes both a natural landscape with trees and architectural elements; a color palette built on the contrast between warm orange and dark brown tones with colorful accents of ultramarine, which create a stained-glass effect. These formal and stylistic features, considered as a whole, along with the overall impression and expressive impact of the work, confirm that it belongs among the high achievements in Genko Genkov’s art. Genko Genkov was born in 1923 in the village of Choba, Plovdiv region. He graduated in Painting from the National Academy of Arts in Sofia under Professor Dechko Uzunov. He worked mainly in the landscape genre. Genkov regularly participated in General Art Exhibitions and in presentations of Bulgarian art abroad. He held eight solo exhibitions – in the halls of the Union of Bulgarian Artists, in the Sofia City Art Gallery, and in ART 36. His last solo exhibition took place in 2006 at the Sofia City Art Gallery. In the same year, the artist passed away in Sofia. (S.N.)
