The "Steaua României" ("Star of Romania") National Order was established on the 10th of May 1877, being officially awarded by the Romanian state. Both military officers and civilians are awarded this order, for exceptional service to the country. The shape of the Ensign was established even since the reign of Alexandru Ioan Cuza, being used also for this distinction's precursor, "Ordinul Unirii" ("The Order of the Union"). This order was not established during Cuza's reign, due to external reasons related to the country's status, which, at that time, was a vassal of the Ottoman Empire. On the front side of the first model there was a crusader eagle standing on a sceptre, alongside the Order's motto, IN FIDE SALUS. On the retro, on the central locket, there was the cypher of King Carol I. Between the cross's arms there were rays, and on the superior arm the Royal Crown was attached, and the ribbon was attached to its ring.
