The National Order "Star of Romania" is the highest award offered by the Romanian country. The oldest National Order ("Order of the Union") was created in 1864 by Cuza Voda and awarded at that time in a small number. The Romanian Parliament and Carol I amend this order by the law voted on May 10, 1877, with the proclamation of independence, and rename it the National Order "Star of Romania", at the proposal of Mihail Kogalniceanu. The National Order "Star of Romania" was repealed in 1948 and re-established in December 1998.
