In Brazil, Pelé is considered a national hero for his football achievements and for supporting policies to improve the social conditions of the poor. In 1961, the President of Brazil, Jânio Quadros, declared that Pelé is a "national treasure". Throughout his career, he became known as the "Black Pearl" (Pérola Negra), "The King of Football" (O Rei do Futebol), "King Pelé" (O Rei Pelé) or simply "The King" (O Rei).
