Paris offers him the ideal context for a more thorough exploration of the drawing technique. Under the guidance of Jean Paul Laurens, he learns how to give the line graphic accuracy, how to respect anatomic proportions, and he also develops the inclination towards themes inspired by life in the countryside. Upon invitation from art collector and theorist Alexandru Bogdan-Pitești, he spends a few years in the village of Vlaici-Olt, where he would execute an extended series portraits and scenes of rural life. Across time, his life has been divided between urban life and the prolific experiences offered by life in the countryside. This way, he could use the direct contact with peasants, in order to develop a deeply subjective vision. In Ressu's creation, the canvas is unmistakeably dominated by the human character, as it is placed above nature or any other element that the artist includes in his work. He overcomes the principles that had been induced to him by Academism during his study years, and he prefects technique, achieving a monumental technique. He focuses on the expressiveness of the depicted faces, offering his characters prominent physical features. As we can also notice in the present work, he uses consistent shapes and proportions whilst placing the feminine character on the field landscape background. His drawing is firm, rigorous, yet harmoniously associated to the chromatic balance. Sometimes, the statuary situations in which the artist captures his models are interrupted by using the line that suggests movement, as it happens with the Breton woman, whom the artist immortalises while sewing. For Camil Ressu, the portrait held a special place in his creation. Initially, he worked in pencil, sketching human figures, evolving until the detailed achievement of broad oil portraits.
