135. Portrait of Aristocratic Lady Bertha Munteanu [1926]

Ștefan Dimitrescu's creation is divided between religious painting and easel painting. He would remain particularly focused on the latter and would make himself especially noticed as a portrait painter. Considered to be a serious and stern painter, his creation does not convey a pessimistic attitude towards the world. His characters are in a meditative mood and bear neutral expressions. When depicting a human face, Dimitrescu focuses rather on capturing the inner features. The deep, rich chromatic, with strong accents and in obvious contrast with the clothing and accessories assigned to his characters, help the artist draw a psychological profile of the subject matter. Dimitrescu's creation uncovers his interest for human typology. The artist is concerned with social themes, which he illustrates both in gender scenes and portraits, as well as in landscapes.
